The 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event is officially under way! This year will feature one less starting day as the Rio has expanded the amount of tables available. 1,066 eager players crammed the Amazon room for the first day for the series, a full 19% more then last year.

Most of the games biggest stars took the day off but there were still quite a few notable players in the field. The 2011 ME Champion, Pius Heinz, was among them and would survive to Day 2, but his roller coaster day meant he his chip tally is pretty close to his starting stack of 10k. PokerStar’s Pro David Williams also struggled throughout the day but managed to dodge elimination by doubling up twice in a late day rally to end with 9,100 in chips.

Some of the big names to be eliminated included Ivan Demidov, Frank Kassela, Eric Froehlich, Phil Hellmuth, Kathy Liebert, Matt Glantz and Joe Hachem.
